Improving observations
The project will work on providing recommendations on the improvements needed in the global observational systems in order to effectively monitor the effectiveness of societal efforts towards climate neutrality, as well as distinguish between the effects of emission reductions and large-scale CDR implementation.
RESCUE will assess the potential of the current observational infrastructure in detecting the long-term signals that emerge in the carbon cycle and other variables as a result of the emission reductions and CDR deployment, and separating them from background noise. Data will be used from existing observational systems, such as the Integrated Carbon Observation System (ICOS) and the Copernicus programme, along with the model output of the project.
Recommendations will also be provided on regions and variables towards which the observational effort should be directed for early detection and attribution of the effectiveness and potential side effects of CDR options.
