RESCUE participates at the first Overshoot Conference

By Andria Nicodemou

The conference brought together researchers, policymakers and practitioners to discuss the challenges and latest science on climate overshoot.

Increasing evidence shows that exceeding the 1.5°C warming threshold might be inevidable. Understanding climate overshoot, the risks involved and how we can respond to these challenges is crucial.

A conference dedicated to this hot research topic was organised for the first time from 30 September to 2 October 2025 in Laxenburg, Austria. The Overshoot Conference, organised by the RESCUE project partner International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), brought together researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to discuss how we can navigate the risks, trade-offs, and opportunities that come with overshoot scenarios.

Several RESCUE researchers participate in the conference and presented posters highlighting research and results from the project:

  • Climate change mitigation scenarios with temperature overshoot and broad CDR portfolio for use in ESMs, by Leon Merfort (PIK)
  • Response of the Earth system to the RESCUE overshoot scenarios: insights from OSCAR model by Guarav Shrivastan and Thomas Gasser (IIASA)
  • Differences in carbon dioxide removal (CDR) representation between Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs) and Earth System Models (ESMs), by Chiara Ciscato (CMCC)

The conference covered a range of relevant topics, including the use of carbon dioxide removal to address climate overshoot, Earth system responses up to net zero and beyond, (ir)reversibility, tipping points, and adaptation among others.
