RESCUE holds Policy Roundtable on CDR and climate overshoot in Brussels

By Editor

On 2 June 2026, RESCUE researchers and policymakers come together to discuss the policy relevance of preliminary project findings on CDR and overshoot.

Understanding the role of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is becoming increasingly important for policy, as we move towards climate neutrality. To address this, the Horizon Europe project RESCUE will host a Policy Roundtable taking place on Tuesday 2 June 2026 at 10:00-15:00 CEST in Brussels

As we are approaching the final phase of the project, the event brings together scientists and policymakers to share and discuss preliminary findings of RESCUE and their policy relevance. The roundtable explores the role of CDR in achieving climate neutrality, particularly in scenarios where the temperature targets are temporarily exceeded (overshoot scenarios) compared to pathways that avoid this exceedance (non-overshoot).

The morning session will focus on CDR portfolios, modelling resultsovershoot and non-overshoot scenarios, and the reversibility of climate impacts. During the afternoon session of the roundtable, we will deep dive into terrestrial and marine CDR options, as well as their environmental and societal implications.

Throughout the day, discussions will focus on key policy messages arising from the project, and these exchanges will directly inform RESCUE’s final synthesis report and policy brief, supporting evidence-based policy recommendations.

10:30 - 12:00 CDR in overshoot vs non-overshoot scenarios and Q&A

This session will present and compare scenarios with and without overshoot, the implications for the climate, reversibility questions, and CDR portfolios. Presented outputs will cover both IAM and ESM.

Afternoon session

13:00-15:00 Terrestrial and marine CDR under no and overshoot scenarios, and expected impacts and Discussion

Several presentations will show recent modelling results for efficiency of CDR methods, as well as potential impacts.
